Claude Desktop

Use your API key directly in the Claude Desktop app through Claude's Third-Party Inference gateway settings.

1Open Claude Desktop. Click the three-line menu ☰ in the top-left corner and go to Help → Troubleshooting → Enable Developer Mode. Allow Claude Desktop to restart if requested.
2Click the three-line menu ☰ again and go to Developer → Configure Third-Party Inference.
3Under Connection, enter the settings below. Leave Artifact preview iframe origin empty unless specifically required, and leave Custom inference headers empty.
4Click Test connection. The connection should succeed. Then click Apply Changes. Claude Desktop may restart.
5If Claude gives you a choice between normal Claude and third-party inference, choose the option referring to Third-party inference, Gateway, 3P or Cowork on 3P. The exact wording may vary slightly depending on your Claude Desktop version. You are now using your API key and API credit.

USE YOUR OWN API KEY HERE — not an Anthropic Console API key.

Do not use Settings → Developer → Edit config. That section is for MCP configuration and is not where the API connection is configured.

Use the base URL exactly as shown. Do not add /v1.

Claude Desktop can discover the Claude models currently available through SmartPlansIL. SmartPlansIL implements the model-discovery endpoint required for this behavior.

When third-party gateway inference is active, some Claude cloud or remote features may not be available. This does not affect normal local Claude Desktop inference through SmartPlansIL.

Enable virtualization — if needed

Only do this if Claude shows an error saying that Virtual Machine Platform is required or that the workspace/hypervisor failed to start.

1Press Start and search for Turn Windows features on or off, then open it.
2Find Virtual Machine Platform, check the box and click OK.
3Wait for Windows to install the feature, then restart the computer.
4Open Claude Desktop again.

If Claude still says that hardware virtualization is disabled, virtualization may also need to be enabled in the computer's BIOS/UEFI settings.

How to go back from SmartPlansIL to your own account use

1Sign out of the third-party session: in Claude Desktop, click your account/profile area (bottom-left or bottom-right, depending on your layout) and choose Sign out.
2Switch back to normal Claude: after signing out, choose the normal Claude option, such as Claude Desktop by Anthropic or Sign in with Claude.ai. Do not choose the third-party, Gateway or 3P option.
3Sign in to the Claude account you want to use. Once signed in normally, Claude Desktop uses your Claude account or subscription usage instead of API credit.

Your SmartPlansIL gateway configuration can remain saved for later.

Setup troubleshooting

Invalid API key / 401

Make sure you pasted the API key issued to you and did not accidentally use an Anthropic Console key.

404 / endpoint not found

Make sure the base URL is exactly https://api.smartplansil.com. Do not add /v1.

Claude Code is using the wrong account or login

Run /status and verify the base URL and credential source. SmartPlansIL should use ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.

Desktop says Gateway was unreachable

Check that the Gateway base URL is https://api.smartplansil.com and that your internet connection is working.

Fast Mode

SmartPlansIL does not currently support Fast Mode. Use standard mode.

What do I receive?

You receive prepaid credit for Claude API usage, a dedicated API key and the SmartPlansIL endpoint. The selected amount represents usage measured at supported Anthropic list-price-equivalent rates.

How does the 50% offer work?

You pay half of the API credit value you select. For example, $100 of credit costs $50 and $500 costs $250. Usage is deducted from the full selected balance.

Is this credit added to my Anthropic account?

No. The credit is used through the SmartPlansIL endpoint. It is not deposited into Anthropic Console or transferable to an Anthropic balance.

Is this Claude Pro or Claude Max?

No. This is prepaid Claude API usage, separate from Claude Pro, Max, Team and other subscription plans.

Can I use it with Claude Desktop?

Yes. Current Claude Desktop versions support third-party inference gateways. Enable Developer Mode, open Developer → Configure Third-Party Inference, choose Gateway, use https://api.smartplansil.com as the gateway base URL, paste your API key, and select x-api-key authentication. Follow the setup section above for the full steps.

Can I use it with Claude Code?

Yes. Set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.smartplansil.com and use the API key issued to you as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. Follow the Windows or macOS setup above.
